Theory of Interaction and Communication

Holmberg gives 6 reasons for his theory:

  1. There needs to be some interaction between the instructor and the student. This will allow students to look at different approaches, develop different views and solutions while interacting with the course.
  2. Emotional involvment is also important for a student. If the course is teaching something the student cares about then they will want to involve themselves more and dive into the learning
  3. If students enjoy the learning then they will learn more.
  4. To increase student motivation, have students participate in the decision making.
  5. Create courses that the students are motivated to take
  6. Facilitators should have a friendly tone and material should be easily accessible to students. This is will help with "learning pleasure, support student motivation, and thus facilitate learning."
 (Simonson et al., 2012)

When using this theory, instructional designers and facilitators want to be thinking about what motivates their learners and what can they do to interact with their learners. Incorporating students and their wants and needs will help facilitate the learning.

If you are wanting to have students interact more with the course then you will want to keep this theory in mind while designing the course.
