Wedemeyer "set forth a system with 10 characteristics emphasizing learner independence and adoption of technology as a way to implement" learner independence (Simonson et al., 2012).
- The course needs to be able to operate wherever there are students whether instructors are around or not.
- The student needs to have a greater sense of responsibility of learning (have them take ownership of their learning).
- This system should also free facilitators to give more time to actual educational tasks.
- This theory focuses on providing learners with a broader range of choices in courses, formats and methodologies.
- Use all proven effective teaching methods and media.
- Media and methods should be mixed so that the course and its topics are taught in the best way known.
- Development of courses need to fit into "an articulated media program."
- Courses allow enhancement opportunities so individual can adapt them to themselves and their unique situations.
- Evaluate student achievement simply.
- Students are able to work at their own pace
(Simonson et al., 2012)
If using this theory, then your online component would allow students to work on lessons and courses of their choosing and when they choose to. This enhances student motivation when it comes to learning as well.
