There are multiple Distance Learning Theories and here you can find a little more information on each other than just their definitions (although you will see that too). It is best when designing a distance learning course to decide which theory will guide you at the beginning (Simonson et al., 2012.
Wedemeyer's Theory of Independent Study
- This theory looks at the "independence of the student' (Simonson et al., 2012). You can find the 10 characteristics that emphasize learner independence. If you are looking at a blended course that will have an independent online component then this is the theory you want to look at and possibly follow when designing your course.
Holmberg's Theory of Interaction and Communication
- Holmberg's theory has "explanatory value in relating teaching effectiveness to the impact of feelings of belonging and cooperation as well as to the actual exchange of questions" (Simonson et al., 2012). If you are looking at a course that will have learner interaction and various communications between learners and facilitators.
